FOREWORD Top

This tune book is dedicated to:
Rt. Hon. Countess of Hardwicke, mother of three Northumbrian Pipers.

The goal of this small tune book is to give you a basic repertoire with which to play from memory with other Northumbrian pipers. It is therefore particularly intended for those pipers learning and playing in musical isolation.

If you commit just one of these simple tunes and its title to memory every 1-2 weeks you can learn this repertoire of thirty tunes in a year. You can then hand this tune book on to someone else.

We asked nineteen of the current Northumbrian piping luminaries for a list of 30 "you really should know" tunes. The contents of this tunebook "The First 30 Tunes" were selected from the consensus of their lists of thirty tunes. The lists and their individual contributors are to be found at the end of the book.

We are also indebted to the NPS for its support, and to Chairman Colin Ross for his oversight. We are particularly indebted to Julia Say for her advice, encouragement, enthusiasm and support at every stage in the publishing process; we could not have done this without that support.

The CD that will eventually be included with this tune book is intended as an aid for the isolated piper to play along with whilst learning the notes of this repertoire.

Happy Piping!
